This theme is a cultural strategy of a suppressed group which turns a pejorative slur against the group into a source of pride. Many of the stories involving feces are in the form of trickster tales about a character named Eilesschpigel.

The chapter points out that there is a historical source in German cultural traits, but in an American context, the feces symbolism is enacted to refer to the loss of language, land, and identity among members of the ethnic group.

Between two stools investigates the representation of scatology – humorous, carnivalesque, satirical, damning and otherwise – in English literature from the middle ages to the eighteenth century. Smith contends that the ‘two stools’ stand for two broadly distinctive attitudes towards scatology. The first is a carnivalesque, merry, even hearty disposition, typified by the writings of Chaucer and Shakespeare.

The second is self-disgust, an attitude characterised by withering misanthropy and hypochondria.

The most tender and altruistic acts of human compassion and care, especially with the very young and very old, deal with excrement. Take public housing. The burning flame of social idealism—the idea that the vocation of the architect and planner was to improve the life of working men and women—flickered and was sometimes quite put out by the harsh realities of managing the dirty clothes, the trash, and the effluent of high-density living.

We often refer to “shit films,” using an excremental vocabulary redolent of detritus, malaise and uncleanliness to denote their otherness and “badness”. That is, films of questionable taste, aesthetics, or value, are frequently delineated and defined by the defecatory: we describe them as “trash”, “crap”, “filth”, “sewerage”, “shithouse”.

Firmly planted in folk tradition, the roots of the caganer are vague, but generally agreed to date from around the late 17th or early 18th Century.

Two very different news stories popped off the laptop screen over the past couple of weeks. Stories we found fascinating links below. One story involved scientists trying to learn more about prehistoric humans in what is now the UK. The other story is about how scientists are tracking a very rare, secretive cat in the mountains of Central America.

An animal rarely seen by humans. But both stories involve one of our favorite subjects: scatology. The study of feces. Ancient fossilized human feces is called coprolite. This poop from Bronze Age residents revealed those people were infected by parasitic worms that can be spread by eating raw fish, frogs and shellfish. The other story involved what the secretive animal leaves behind as it moves around. It tells them a great deal about where the cats go and what they eat, among other things.
